    Other Events:

    • Emigration: 1648, England to York/Lancaster County, Virginia
    • Grant: 31 Mar 1653, Lancaster County, Virginia; Thomas Kidd, Grantee; Description: 200 acres on the south side of Rappahannock River and on the north west side of a south west branch of Burnhams Creek.
    • Witness: 1657, Lancaster County, Virginia; Thomas Kidd appears is the Lancaster Order Book, pg 20, as witness to Constable John Woodles and Thomas Conner's deed. Middlesex County was created from Lancaster County and Thomas Kidd was a member of the Christ Church, where the birth of all his children appear, except for the oldest, Thomas Jr, who may have been a son from an earlier marriage.
    • Grant: 7 Apr 1664, Lancaster County, Virginia; Thomas Kidd, grantee; Description: 194 acres at the head of Burnhams Creek als Sunderland?s Creek; upon a branch of Peanketank Swamp called White Oak Branch.

    Notes:

In reference to Thomas Kidd's parentage and birth place:

The date and place of birth for Thomas is entirely hypothetical, and NOT proven at this time. Sandra Kidd, coordinator of the Kidd Y-DNA Project tracked down a later Kidd who emigrated from Soham, England to the US, and persuaded him to participate in the Kidd DNA Project, and he did not match any of the VA Kidds.

    Sandra writes (April 19, 2011):

"Of course, one Y-DNA test does not mean that anything is definite. But when Max's results came in, I delved back into the Ken Smallbone research that had been commissioned by a man named Rod Harless, whose wife is a Kidd from West Virginia.

I had both copies of Smallbone's report and copies of Rod's letters to him. As I read it more closely, I realized that Rod had picked Soham as a point of origin for Thomas Kidd primarily because there were IGI entries for a Thomas Kidd of about the right age to be Thomas of Middlesex Co VA (IGI is a set of records collected by the Mormon Church, you may know of these).

"I was able to track Rod down and ask him what led him to choose this particular Thomas Kidd. The answer: nothing more than a hunch!

He picked this Thomas, and then commissioned Ken Smallbone to research whether the Thomas Kidd of Soham Parish, born ca 1625/6 to William Kidd and Elizabeth Nethercoat, married and/or died in Soham.

Smallbone searched the parish registers (which evidently is a daunting task) and concluded that there was no marriage or death or will for this particular Thomas Kidd, which means he could have left the area. But even if he did leave the area, he could have gone anywhere--Cambridge, London, etc. And more importantly, there is nothing to connect the Thomas of Soham with the Thomas of Middlesex Co VA. and there are a dozen of more Thomas Kidds in the IGI born around this same time--so what led Rod to pick this one, I still do not know.

"This information, needless to say, was a bit sobering--because by this time (2006), the Soham Parish origins had been broadcast far and wide--and I was one of the people helping to broadcast them. It has proven impossible to retract--but I fear there is nothing to support it. I keep looking for another Y-DNA candidate, but I have not yet found one with Soham roots.

"The only possible tantalizing clue--which may or may not have relevance--is that the first record created for Thomas Kidd in then York Co VA (1646) is for the will of a Peter Deare or Death--though the name is more likely Deare. In Soham, there is one marriage for a Margaret Deare to a William Kidd. Could the Deare surname be a connection? I really do not know.

"As a footnote to this tale, I did also manage to contact Ken Smallbone to see if he would pick up the Thomas Kidd research to try to determine if anyone did emigrate to America from the line, or if this Deare-Kidd connection had relevance. He was by then in the main retired, and turned down my offer to hire him."

    ********************************************

In 1648 William Kidd came as an indentured servant sponsored by Richard Lee. He settled on 200 acres on the Burham Creek in Lancaster Co Va on the south side of the Rappahannock River, which became part of Middlesex Co. There were a number of land transactions involving Thomas Kidd between 1658 and 1674. By 1674 Thomas had acquired a 400 acre tract and a 200 acre tract in Middlesex Co.

Many researchers believe Thomas Kidd married Jane Willis, daughter of Thomas Willis, whose lands adjoined those of Thomas Kidd. Her last name hasn't been proven
