Fake Obit from 1944 - Not sure why it was written, but there have been multiple stories of Emery faking his death to avoid authorities, or to try and get money for his "burial" from family. Or, it could be he was in some kind of accident and was really mistakenly considered deceased. |
- Obit provided by Sue Seedorf. Taken from a Virginia Newspaper. Do not know of the name of the Newspaper or the date. I calculated what the date might have been going by the time my father Vernon was in the Navy.
Former Countian Reported Killed In Fort Worth, Texas Emory H. Burress, 37, former resident of McDowell County, now in the army, was instantly killed in an automobile accident at Fort Worth, Texas, Saturday afternoon, according to word received here over the weekend.
No details of the accident were received other than that the car was struck by a train, at a railroad crossing, killing Mr. Burress and injuring two women.
Born in Tazewell County, Mr. Burress was employed for a few years by the Carter Coal Company, at Caretta, and later worked for a railroad company at Huntington. He had been in the west the past few years.
He is survived by his father, Raleigh H. Burress of Cedar Bluff; four brothers, Sherman and Byrd, at Richlands, Va.; Ernest, at Caretta; and Perry Vernon, who is in the service. He also is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Tyler Bledsoe of Squire, WV and two sisters in Baltimore, Md. and a son, Vernon, who is in the US Navy.
