66 year old James Estil Lawson of Red Ash, died early Saturday morning,
June 15, in a Richlands hospital after he was stuck by a Norfolk and
Western Railway coal train late Friday night near Richlands. He received
head lacerations and other injuries in the mishap. N & W officials said
Lawson had apparently fallen into a ditch near the railroad tracks and
apparently was trying to get up when he was hit by the train. An
investigation by N & W officials was being continued Saturday night. Born
in Tazewell County, Lawson was a veteran of WWII. He was a son of the
late James Thomas and Sarah Jane Simmons Lawson. Survivors include his
step mother, Mrs. Gilmer Cox of Richlands, three brothers, Melvin Lawson
of Doran, John Lawson of Raven and Fred Lawson of Red Ash; three sisters,
Mrs. Dora Webb of Red Ash, Mrs. Frazier Nicewander of Raven and Mrs.
George Smith of Tazewell; four half brothers, Elliot Lawson of Cleveland,
O., J.T. Lawson of Short Gap, Russell Lawson of Minnow, Ohio and Troy
Lawson of Red Ash, and four half sisters, Mrs. Raymond Prather of Elyria,
O., Mrs. Colonel Anderson of Cleveland O., Mrs. Kenneth Stillwell of Cedar
Bluff, and Mrs. William Byrd of Detroit Mich. Funeral services were
conducted Monday at the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands with
Elders Oscar Pruett and Witton Sparks officiating. Burial followed in the
