December 16, 1929.
Miss Murphy,
Catholic Social Welfare Bureau.
471 Van Buren Street.

No: Kornatowski, Mike, Pearl, Edward, Stefe, Regina, Harry, Walter, Richard
My dear Miss Murphy:
The following information concerning the Kornatowski family about whom we talked with you sometime ago has been secured through those sources:
Mrs. Kate Pientka, 846 6th Ave., sister of Mr. Kornatowski.
Mrs. Winnie Tuchelski, 1108 Garden Ave., sister of Mr. Kornatowski.
Mrs. Katie Ruskiewicz, Morton Grove, Ill. Mother of Mr. Kornatowski.
Mrs. Helen Vatroses, 1054 51st St. Chicago, sister of Mr. Kornatowski
St. Joseph's School, sister Superior.
Miss Kominski, School Nurse.
Dr. Messmer to whom Mr. Kornatowski goes for treatment.
State Bldg, and Loan Association, from whom home is being purchased.
County Dispensary, where Harry recently made T and A.
Milwaukee Children's Hospital, where Regina was under care.
County Poor Office, which is assisting family.
Family background, Mr. and Mrs. (Mike) Kornatowski were both born in the old Country of Polish Catholic parentage. Mr. Kornatowski came to the United States with his parents at the age of 18 years. The oldest child in a family of six children, 4 girls and two boys. With the exception of one single brother (Joseph) who has since returned to Poland, the children are all married and have large families of their own. Mr. Kornatowski (Valentine) is now dead and Mrs. Kornatowski (Katherine) is remarried to Stanley Ruskiewiez, a fireman, with a sixteen year old son. Mrs. Kornatowski (Pearl) came alone to the United States to a cousin, Mrs. Kazana of Hegewisch, it was from the Kazana home that the couple was married.
The Kornatowski's moved to Milwaukee in 1918 and it was here the remainder of the children were born. Mr. Kornatowski, an electric welder by trade; worked regularly and their home life is reputed to have been a congenial one. Mrs. Kornatowski, who is described as an enormous woman always troubled with various veins, died suddenly on March 5, 1920 from an "abortion - contributing causes portionitis and nepticism." In April, while driving to Chicago, Mr. Kornatowski's car was completely wrecked by a passing truck, which sped on before they had had an opportunity to secure the license number. No one was injured except Mr. Kornatowski, who was blinded in both eyes
he has been under the care of Dr. Messmer since that time and upon his recommendation, Mr. Kornatowski recently filed application for a blind pension, since his injury Mr. Kornatowski has not only been unable to work but has
kept one or more of the children, usually Edward, out of school every week to assist him.
School: The children are attending St. Josephat's School. Edward will enter the 6th grade in February, He seems intelligent and conscientious, but has attended so irregularly that his work this fall has been very poor. Stefe who is in the fourth grade, is a poor student, indifferent and careless. He has passed regularly, Regina is in the first grade for the third time. Is of low grade mentality but not considered defective. We are arranging a mental examination for her in the near future. The children come to school neat and clean. They are not disciplinary problems in any time.
Church: The children have all been baptised. They now attended, Josephat's church.
Health: Because of Dr. Kenneth's unwillingness to discuss Mr. Kormatowski's condition with me, we can give you no specific information concerning his proposals, Larry and Walter were examined by Mr. Lenneweist prior to entrance to St. Joseph's orphanage. Harry entered County Hospital for tonsillectomy on 10/11/29. His general condition was good. Edward, Regina and Stefe were examined at Children's Hospital by Dr. Evans on 12/13/29. Edward was 54" tall, weighed 68 1/2, making him 3% pounds underweight. Tonsillectomy was advised. Condition otherwise good. Stefe weighed 60 1/4, height was 49 1/2 tall, making him 5% overweight. His left tonsil is enlarged and infected. Doctor does not advise operation unless he begins having sore throat. Regina was a patient at Children's Hospital from 10/16/29 to 11/5/29 with diagnosis of "ulcerative stomatitis" she was examined by Dr. Evans on 12/13/29. Height was 46, weight 30, making her ? underweight. Her mouth is now in good condition and general condition satisfactory. The children were all given ?? and throat cultures and smears taken on Regina. We will advise you of the results, of those as soon as they are returned.
Income: The family's only income has been also $15 rent from the basement of the home at 735 first Ave. supplemented by regular relief through the county poor office.
Debts: Mr. Kornatowski has not paid Dr. Neanner since May but the doctor is sending him no statements as he is familiar with the situation. Mrs. Novak, grocer at 739 First Ave. has given the family credit to the extent of approximately 80.00. Immediately after his injury Mr. Kormatowski's sister, Mrs. Valtrouse of Chicago, boarded Richard. Mr. Kornatowski still owes her 30.00 for his care. The family is buying their home from the State Bldg. And Loan Association, 444 Mitchell St. They have had a mortgage of $2860.00 toward which they were paying $15.00 per month principal and $14.56 interest. They have paid in to date $271.80. Mr. Prysbablo to whom we talked on 12/16/29 has agreed to use $71.90 of this amount to apply on accrued debt, cut the mortgage to $2600, making the payments approximate the average rent the County Poor office has agreed to such an arrangement.
Relatives of the family in this county are:
Sister - Mr. Kornatowski - Mrs. Kate (Stanley) Pientka, 846 6th Ave.
Sister - Mr. Kornatowski - Mrs. Helen Vatrosee, 1054 51st St. Chicago.
Mother - Mr. Kornatowski - Mrs. Kate (Stanley) Rusckewicz, Norton Grove, Ill.
Cousin - Mrs. Kornatowski- Mrs. Teofil Kaszna, Hegewiach, Indiana.
There is one other sister of Mr. Kornatowski's in Chicago, whose address we do not have, a deserted woman with four children. A single brother, Joe, has returned to Poland. Mrs. Kaszna could not be located. We have interviewed local relatives and the Central Charity Bureau of Chicago has communicated with the mother and sister there. There seems to be considerable family friction particularly between Mr. Kornatowski and Mrs. Tuchalski, over finances. At the time of Mrs. Tuchalski's marriage some five years ago Mr. Kornatowski loaned her money for the wedding. Mr. and Mrs. Tuchalski ignored the debt until Mr. Kornatowski sued them. Being unable to collect, he still feels very bitter toward them. None of these relatives would assume responsibility for any of the children or assist financially.
Mrs. Tuchalski has three children and is again pregnant. Her husband makes $27.00 per week in the tannery and has warned very irregularly recently. The Pientka family has six children ranging from three years to high school age. None is able to work. They are buying their home. These sisters describe Mr. Kornatowski as stubborn, opinioned and very difficult to set along with. Mrs. Vatrosee has three children and works at night herself to supplement her husband's earnings. The mother claims an inability to take any responsibility because of her age, ill health, and her husband's small earnings.
Plan: Our plan for the family has been to place Regina and Stefe at St. Joseph's Orphanage; place Richard in boarding house at our expense; permit Edward to remain at home with his father, at least until we have a definite prognosis for Mr. Kornatowski's eye condition. If Mr. Kornatowski is granted a blind pension and can rent out the three front rooms of their home, as well as the basement, we will attempt at a later date to work out a budget by which he can assume at least a small amount toward the children's expenses.
We do appreciate the help you have given us in planning for the family.
Yours very truly,
