    • From "New York Freeman's Journal and Catholic Register," June 8, 1895: "Col. G. R. C. Floyd died at Logan, W. Va., May 7, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. S. P. Kelly. Col. George Rogers Clarke Floyd was the fourth son of Gov. John Floyd, and was born in Montgomery County, Va., Sept. 13, 1810. In 1845 he was appointed by President Polk as Secretary of State for the Territory of Wisconsin, which position he held until the admission of Wisconsin as a State in 1848. Some time during the fifties he moved to Logan County, W. Va., where he resided ever since. He served as a Confederate soldier during the war, and was a member of the West Virginia Legislature in 1872-1873. He leaves three sons-- Hon. John B. Floyd of Charleston, W. P. Floyd and B. Rush Floyd of Logan County, and four daughters--Mrs. S. P. Kelly, Mrs. Thomas Wiles, and Misses Sallie and Letitia Floyd. Col. Floyd was a devoted Catholic."
    Notes
    • Some notes on George Rogers Clark Floyd:

George Rogers Clark Floyd, son of John and Latitia, held the position of Justice of the Peace for Burkes Garden. He also was appointed Secretary of the Territory in 1843.

George's father, Dr. John Floyd, was a member of Congress for serveral terms and in 1831 became govenor of Virginia.

George Rogers Clark Floyd is thought to have had some nine children by three partners over several years. One of these partners seems to be Cosby Burress. I'm assuming she must have been a mistress as they never married and many of his other children were born around the same time as his children with Cosby. In 1860 Cosby is found in Kentucky, living next door to George and his son Rush. I'm guessing she either followed him to Kentucky or he brought her with him. By 1870 Cosby is back in Tazewell and George is in West Virginia. Perhaps she finally got tired of his shit and left him?

    • I don't believe they were ever married. There are two marriages for George, neither of them to Cosby, but their children were born during the years that George was married.
