    The birth date and place of birth on this card are incorrect. My father tried to first get drafted so lied about his age. When they didn't draft him, he enlisted himself in the Navy at age 14. 9 months later when the navy found out he was under age, they discharged him.

    Dad was on his own since he was 13. With no place to go he lied about his age and enlisted in the Navy at the age of 14. He made it 8 months before they found out his true age and discharged him. When he turned 18 he enlisted with the Marines.

    Obituary: VERNON H. BURRESS - He was born to Hazel and Emory Burress on July 2, 1929 in Bluefield WV. He moved here from Baxley, GA in 1973. He was a retired electrician and a World War II Navy Veteran and Korean Conflict Marine Veteran. He was a member of IBEW Local #553 and the American Legion Post #155 of Crystal River, Fla. He was a protestant. Surviving are his wife; Shirley A. Burress of Crystal River, Fla., two sons; Edward Burress of Gloucester, Va, and Gregory Burress of Homosassa, Fla., one daughter; Michelle Burress of FL and six grandchildren. Private cremation will take place. Brown Funeral Home, Crystal River - Lecanto.

Simpkins, Justice, issued a warrant the 10th day of December, 1934, directed to Lick Puckett (?) of said County and delivered the same ? to Lick Puckett (?) of McDowell County, West Virginia.

    Upon the 10th day of December, 1934, said Lick Puckett (?) executed said warrant by bringing before me, R.L. Simpkins, Justice aforesaid, at my office in said County and District, Big Creek, the above named defendant.

    Now on this 10th day of December, 1934, the defendant being arraigned his plea is that he is guilty ?? Proceeded to try the case.

    Charging that her husband, E.H. Burress, had "beaten me up." Mrs. Bessie Burress, of Welch, had Magistrate H.W. Herndon of Welch issue a warrant for his arrest Tuesday. Officers lodged him in jail to await a hearing before the magistrate.

    Former Countian Reported Killed In Fort Worth, Texas Emory H. Burress, 37, former resident of McDowell County, now in the army, was instantly killed in an automobile accident at Fort Worth, Texas, Saturday afternoon, according to word received here over the weekend.

    No details of the accident were received other than that the car was struck by a train, at a railroad crossing, killing Mr. Burress and injuring two women.

    Born in Tazewell County, Mr. Burress was employed for a few years by the Carter Coal Company, at Caretta, and later worked for a railroad company at Huntington. He had been in the west the past few years.

    He is survived by his father, Raleigh H. Burress of Cedar Bluff; four brothers, Sherman and Byrd, at Richlands, Va.; Ernest, at Caretta; and Perry Vernon, who is in the service. He also is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Tyler Bledsoe of Squire, WV and two sisters in Baltimore, Md. and a son, Vernon, who is in the US Navy.

    This day came the state by her attorney and the prisoner, Emery Hamilton Burress, in person and by counsel, was set to the bar of the court in custody of the keeper of the jail of this county and thereupon the prisoner demurred to and moved the court to quash the indictment against him herein and the court after maturely considering said demurrer and motion to quash doth overruled the same.

    Thereupon the prisoner for plea says that he is not guilty in manner and form as the sate in her indictment against him herein hath alleged and this he puts himself upon the county and the state doth the like, and by agreement the trial of this case is passed until the 18th day of January 1955 and the prisoner is remanded to jail.

    Died of a heart attack. Story from adopted daughter Patsy is that he came home from work and complained to Fannie that he wasn't feeling well. Fannie told him to go lay down and she would get him some aspirin. She she returned to the room she found him passed away.

    Hazel, aged 21 years, wife of Emery Burris, of Williamson, W. Va., died of an appendicitis operation in a hospital at that place late Monday evening, and the body in charge of Farmer undertaking establishment of Richlands, was returned here for burial. Mrs. Burris was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P.O. Palmer, citizens of this place for several years. She attended school here and had a host of friends throughout this section. Surviving her, besides a husband and one son three years old, is her father, P.O. Palmer and two brothers, Belve and Elbert, of this place, and one sister, Mrs. Clarence McGhee, of Red Ash.
