WAS IT MURDER? William Mallory Killed in Thompson Valley
    - Shot Through the Lungs

William Mallory was murdered last night between 10 and 11 o'clock in Thompson Valley, near the residence of John Sanders. As we go to press this morning the body of Mallory is still lying where it fell. The particulars is given us over the phone this morning, are as follows: Zeke Jones and the murdered man both of whom work at Adam's mill, went to Little Valley yesterday morning, and returned late in the afternoon, drunk.

The two men came to R B Peery and Co. store between sundown and dark. Mallory was quite drunk, Jones was drunk but not quite so much so. The two men left the store together about 10 o'clock. John Sanders, who lives about a mile and a half below the store heard a number of shots in quick succession, near his house, and saw the flash from the pistol, but could not tell who the men were. He went to the spot after the firing ceased and found Mallory lying in the meadow just below the road, dead, with a bullet hole in his right side. Sanders says a number of shots were fired, but up to this writing only one bullet hole as been found in Mallory's body. Jones, who was last seen with Mallory, has fled, and has not been seen since. He was known to be armed when he left R. B. Peery's store.

Both men lived in the Valley. Mallory leaves a large family of small children. Both Jones and Mallory were considered bad men, so our informant says.

Clinch Valley News 9 Aug 1901 (Thompson Valley happenings)

The shooting and killing of Mallory by Zeke Jones, which took place near here last Thursday night is deeply regretted by all of our people, and has cast a dark shadow in our entire community, which can only be cleared away by the lapse of time which will lead many of us to our eternal destiny. The sad affair is thus related by those who seem to be best informed. The men were the very best of friends and on Wednesday had made a contract to work together all summer. But Mallory said he wanted to have a little fun before he was into the summers work. He said he had worked hard in his corn and had not had any fun. So on Thursday morning Jones and Mallory started to Little Valley together seemingly on the very best of terms, but it is said they were heard quarreling on their way back but no one thought of them having trouble until they got to Mr. Sanders where the shooting took place. The men were both well known in this neighborhood, and both were said to be excellent laborers. Jones has two living wives but is divorced from each. Mallory leaves a wife and 4 little children. His wife is in very poor health and deserves the help of the surrounding community.
