    • Court Case: 1852, Franklin County, Virginia; Bill was filed in Chancery pertaining to her death, giving death date, children and some grand children's names. Bill filed September 1852, Final decree 4 Jun 1855 To the worshipful court of the county of Frankin in Chancery Humbley complaining showeth unto your worships your orator and oratix Peter Cochran and Sally, his wife, formerly Sally Newberry, that Sally (Sarah Jane), the mother of your oratix, departed this life intestate, some time since since and xxx of a small tract of land containing about ___ acres and lying on the waters of Runnett Bag Creek in the county of Franklin. That she left as her heirs at law the following children and grand children your oratix, Sally Cochran who was intermarried with your orator (Peter Cochran), John Newberry, Omey Newberry, Thomas Newberry, Rozina Newberry, Audrey Newberry, Anderson Newberry, Jinsy Keen, formerly Jinsy Newberry, who has intermarried with a certain Jacob Keen, Vina Profitt, formerly Vina Newberry who has intermarried with a certain Austin Proffit, John Ratcliff, Thomas Hess and Sarah Hess, the last three of which are children of Patsy a child of the said Sally Newberry who first intermarried with a certain ______ Ratcliff and whom she had the said John Ratcliff, and after the death of said Ratcliff she intermarried with a certain Hess by whom she had the said Thomas Hess and Sarah Hess and then died. Your Orator and Oratix represent that the said land is of small ??? and insusceptible of division as well on the account as because some of the heirs are married women and under disabilities ?? further respresent than that the inte***n (interest?) The handwriting was extremely bad and hard to read - basically, the complaint was that the land was too small to divide among all the heirs, and Peter Cochran and his wife wanted to have the land sold and the proceeds divided between the heirs. The land was eventually sold at public auction and sold for $61 dollars, and each heir got their share after court costs.

  7. 14.  Michael StrouthMichael Strouth was born in 1811 in Botetourt County, Virginia, USA (son of George Michael Strough (Possible) and Ula Minter (Possible)); died in 1863-70 in Virginia, United States.

    Other Events:

    • Military: 7 April 1862, Lebanon, Russell County, Virginia, USA; Michael Strough Pvt. Confed Capt. John A. McFarlane's Co. VA Cav. Appears on Co Muster Roll of the Org named above for Jun 30 to Nov. 30, 1862. Enlisted" Apr 7, 1862, Lebanon, Va by O. Caldwell for a period of 3 years. Present...

    Notes:

Michael's parents are listed by other researchers as either George Michael Strouth and Ula Minter, or Henry Strouth and Dianah Armstrong. I don't know which of these are correct (if either of them are). I think maybe one came from a book written by Peggy Strouth Scott called "The Strouth Family." I haven't seen the book so don't know where she got her information. George Michael and Ula did get married in Botetourt County, VA and could be the right age for Michael parents.

There is also, in the 1850 Giles County census, a:

Deanah Stow (Dianah Strouth?) 75 Mulatto, living with Joseph W. (28), Rebecca (W), Mancy R, James W. Mary, and Joshua (33); Joseph and Joshua are also listed as Mulatto.

This is probably Dianah (Armstrong) who married Henry Strouth. If Joseph and Micheal really are brothers, this would seem to confirm the Dianah & Henry Strouth parentage. However, Dianah, Joseph and Jacob are all listed as Mulatto. No census lists Michael as Mulatto. In future census (1870, 1880) Joseph is listed as white. Could it be only Dianah was Mulatto and so they listed her two sons, that she was living with at the time, Mulatto as well?

Until I am able to get to Virginia or come across more documentation on the Strouth's, there are no firm answers. If anyone has documentation actually proving the parents of Michael, please share.

    Birth:
George and Ula are only possible parents...still need documentation to prove this relationship

    Died:
In Muster Roll in 1863, but can not find in census or anywhere else in 1870 - May have died in the war?

Michael married Mary Isabelle "Polly" Miller in 1839 in Russell County, Virginia, United States. Mary (daughter of John Nicholas Miller and Anna Catherine "Caty" Cline) was born in 1816 in North Carolina; died after 1880 in Tennessee?. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
