(Ancestry Message Boards, researcher David Loring Totten)

There is a Samuel Totnam from County Hertfordshire, the same general area that Joane Meade and her father Thomas Meade came from (Bishop's Stortford in County Hertfordshire). Records show he was from Halstead in County Hertfordshire and married there in 1607. A possible father for Edward, but as yet unproven. Also in Halstead was a Thomas Totnam (profession listed as a clothier) his will was documented in 1593. There is also a Richard Totnam with a will documented in 1625, but he was from Clavering in County Hertfordshire. A Ciprian Totnam married in 1614 from Gt. Holland in County Hertfordshire (this was one year before Edward's birth).

Edward married Joan Meade on 15 Oct 1641 in Saint Michaels, Bishops Stortford, Hertford, England. Joan (daughter of Thomas Meade and Joane Day) was born in 1621 in Hertsford, England; died in in Hempstead, New York. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Totnan, Edward, gent., of St. Andrew-in-the-Wardrob, bachelor, 26, and Joane Meade, of Bishops Stortford, Herts, spinster, 20, daughter of Thomas Meade, of same, gent., who consents - at Bishops Stortford aforesaid. 15 Oct 1641 (Bishop of London's Office)

*(from Ancestry message boards) St. Andrews-by-the-Wardrobe, is a church in the Kings Wardrobe district of London.

The King's Great Wardrobe was overseen by the Master of the Wardrobe. The duty of the Master of the Wardrobe was to provide proper furniture for coronations, marriages, and funerals of the sovereign and royal family, clothes of state, beds, hangings, and other necessaries for the houses of foreign ambassadors, clothes of state for Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Prince of Wales, and ambassadors abroad as also to provide robes for Ministers of State, Knights of the Garter, etc. The last Master of the Wardrobe was Ralph, Duke of Montague, who died 1709.

The "Wardrobe District", along with most of London was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666. The church (St. Andrews-by-the-Wardrobe) has been rebuilt twice since Edwards time, once after the Great Fire of 1666 and then again after the bombing of London during WWII. It might be assumed that if Edward lived in this district, and was indeed a "Gentleman" of the period, that he was involved in the business of the "King's Great Wardrobe". This remains to be seen or proven though. There are other Totnam names in English records that identify the occupation of the individual as a "clothier" or in other words a tailor. Further speculation to be sure, which has yet to be proven.
