Raymond A. Burress, age 79, of Tazewell, Va., died Thursday, July 9th, 2009 in a Tazewell, Va. hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born in Berwind, W.Va. and was a son of the late Byrd Patton and Ella Mitchell Burress, both McDowell County natives. He was a U. S. Army Korean War Veteran, retired Chief Warrant Officer 3. Mr. Burress made his home in the Tazewell County area the past 31 years, was a former employee of Mullins Ford in Richlands and attended the North Tazewell United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Addison. Survivors are: His Wife, Mrs. Pauline Blankenship Burress; one son, Mr. Alan W. Burress and wife, Cheryl of Pounding Mill, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Betty Jean Burress Holmes of Richlands, Va.; grandchildren, Kevin Wayne Burress, wife, Cindy, Christopher Burress, and Gregory Keith Burress and wife, Teresa; great-grandchildren, Kaylee Brooke Burress, Jordyn Burress, Miranda Burress, Cody Lester, Cheyenne Hope Burress, and Shonna Lester; special caregivers, members of North Tazewell United Methodist Church and Fincastle Baptist Church. Funeral services for Mr. Raymond A. Burress will be conducted Sunday, July 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Gordon McBride officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Kevin Wayne Burress, Gregory Keith Burress, Fred Lester, Avery Barton, Don Lord, and Jack Fizer, Sr. The staff of Mercy Ambulance Service will serve as honorary pallbearers. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 Richlands will conduct military graveside rites. Mrs. Ella Rivers Mitchell Burress, 61, wife of Byrd P. Burress, of Rt. 1, Cedar Bluff, died Saturday, Oct. 17, in a Richlands hospital following a long illness. Born in North Tazewell, she was a daughter of the late Zack and Hannah Sparks Mitchell. She was a life long resident of Tazewell County and had lived in the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff for the past 14 years. She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Richlands. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alvin (Betty) Holmes of Richlands and Mrs. Joe (Margaret) Addison of Rt. 1, Cedar Bluff; one son, Chief Warrant officer Raymond A. Burress, stationed with the U.S. Navy in Chestertown, Md.; one sister, Mrs. Leslie Sparks of Rt. 1, North Tazewell; five brothers, Henry Mitchell of Edgewood, Md., Hobert Mitchell of Churchville Md., Fielden Mitchell of Airville, Pa., Thomas Mitchell of Council, Va. and Cecil Mitchell of Drill, Va., and one granddaughter and five grandsons. Funeral services were conducted Monday at the Untied Pentecostal church with the Rev. John R. Gooslin and Rev. George Durham officiating. Burial followed in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill. Pallbearers were: Harold, Darrel, Don, Joe, Bobby, and Junior Mitchell. Both his obit and his death certificate says Hankins Cemetery, and that is where his 2nd wife Frances is buried.

But Earls Cem, Earls Branch, Tazewell Va is where living relatives say that he was buried, and Patrica Christian (Raleigh's granddaughter) says she remembers going to the funeral when she was 14.

There is no stone at either place for him.

JOHN BURRESS, RICHLANDS, DIES

Native of Tazewell County Had Been Bedfast from Rheumatism For Past Six Months; Funeral Today Richlands, VA, May 24 --

John Burress, 68 died at his home one mile northeast of Richlands early this morning from rheumatism, from which he had been bedfast for the past six months.

He was a native of Tazewell County and was twice married.

His first wife was a Miss Tilda Earls of near Gillespie.

His second wife was a Miss Cinthia Chambers of near Richlands.

He was known quite well among the people of Tazewell County as the "horse trader" on account of his good judgement of horses.

He is survived by his wife and the following children: John Burress, Jr.; Raleigh Burress of West Virginia; Newton Burress of North Tazewell; Mrs. George Quesenberry of Pounding Mill; Mrs. Henry Shortridge and Mrs. Vergil Reedy of Richlands.

Funeral will be held at the home Saturday and interment will be in the Jones Chapel cemetery near Cedar Bluff
