  1. 1.  John Berry (Hickman) was born in 1763 in Accomack County, Virginia (son of James Berry and Sarah Hickman); died in July 1843 in Accomack County, Virginia.

    Other Events:

    • Rev War: 1778, Accomack County, Virginia; Served in the Revolutionary War in in 1775 at Accomack Co, VA.
    • Will: 11 March 1782, Accomack County, Virginia; John Berry, alias Hickman, son of Sarah Hickman given 4 acres in the will of James Berry. At probate it was noted that there was no heir at law within the US. ( It is assumed that he was the natural son of James Berry, but not lawful son.)
    • Land Purchase: 1787, Accomack County, Virginia; Puch land east of Parksley. In 1785 Richard Hickman, known as "Luck" for distinction& his wife Frances sold 10 acres to Selby Simpson. In 1787 Simpson & wife Grace resold to John Berry Hickman.
    • Land Purchase: 1796, Accomack County, Virginia; William Hickman deeded 50 acres at the south of his land to Charles Stockley, trustee, and the next year it was purchased by John Berry Hickman. Patent Book 6, 82 (land near Parksley)
    • Land Purchase: 1797, Accomack County, Virginia; Caleb and Rachel Dix sold the west half of 43 1/2 acres to John Berry Hickman
    • Court: 28 Aug 1832, Accomack County, Virginia; John Berry Hickman appeared in Court to make his declaration to support the request for a pension for serving in the Revolutionary War.
    • Declaration: 28 Aug 1832, Accomack County, Virginia; Declared before Court that John Berry Hickman and John Berry, Sr. are one and the same person. He was in the habit of indiscriminately signing his name in either form.
    • Pension: 10 Oct 1833, Accomack County, Virginia; Pension approved for service in the Revolutionary War in the amount of $40 semi-annually and $200 lump sum in arrears.

    Birth:
    It is assumed that John is an illegitimate son of James Berry and Sarah Hickman. James leaves 4 acres of land near Mappsville in Accomack Co, to John in his will. John sometimes signed his name John Berry & sometimes John Berry Hickman.

    Will probated 31 July 1843

    • Land Purchase: 1770, Accomack County, Virginia; Purchased 4 acres of land near Mappsville, Accomack County. This land is later left in his will to son John Berry Hickman. Virginia's Eastern Shore, A History of Northampton and Accomack Counties, Volume Two pg 1228

    Notes:

    Birth:
    Father may be William Berry of Ireland, with two daughters Rebecca and Allah, sisters, that he mentions in his will. It is assumed that John Berry is the illegitimate son of James Berry and Sarah Hickman.

    Died:
    There is a letter from William Snead to the Governor of Virginia requesting advice for handling James Berry's Will leaving an estate of 3000 pounds to persons living in Ireland. See notes.

    • Will: 25 April 1683, Accomack County, Virginia; Inherits land east of parksley northeast corner of the tract. In 1707 William sold his 135 acres to Charles Fonelson. In 1712 Fonelson and his wife Ann sold to William Miles and it became merged with a part of A116
    • Land Sale: 6 Aug 1700, Accomack County, Virginia; William Hickman presented and acknowledged a deed for land to Roger and Henry Hickman. Elizabeth Hickman relinquished her dower rights
    • Land Sale: 1707, Accomack County, Virginia; Sold his 135 acres (land inherited from his father) to Charles Fonelson.
    • Land Purchase: 1717, Nanticoke Hundred, Somerset Co; Bought land at Nanticoke Hundred, Somerset Co MD
    • Deed: 1747, Accomack County, Virginia; Deeds gift tract or 135 acres east of Parksley to his son Richard. This was land his brother John owned that William inherited after his John Hickman died.
