Generation: 2

  1. 2.  George Rogers Clark Floyd was born on 3 Sep 1810 in Montgomery County, Virginia, USA; died on 7 May 1895 in Logan County, West Virginia.

    Notes:

Some notes on George Rogers Clark Floyd:

George Rogers Clark Floyd, son of John and Latitia, held the position of Justice of the Peace for Burkes Garden. He also was appointed Secretary of the Territory in 1843.

George's father, Dr. John Floyd, was a member of Congress for serveral terms and in 1831 became govenor of Virginia.

George Rogers Clark Floyd is thought to have had some nine children by three partners over several years. One of these partners seems to be Cosby Burress. I'm assuming she must have been a mistress as they never married and many of his other children were born around the same time as his children with Cosby. In 1860 Cosby is found in Kentucky, living next door to George and his son Rush. I'm guessing she either followed him to Kentucky or he brought her with him. By 1870 Cosby is back in Tazewell and George is in West Virginia. Perhaps she finally got tired of his shit and left him?

    Died:
From "New York Freeman's Journal and Catholic Register," June 8, 1895: "Col. G. R. C. Floyd died at Logan, W. Va., May 7, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. S. P. Kelly. Col. George Rogers Clarke Floyd was the fourth son of Gov. John Floyd, and was born in Montgomery County, Va., Sept. 13, 1810. In 1845 he was appointed by President Polk as Secretary of State for the Territory of Wisconsin, which position he held until the admission of Wisconsin as a State in 1848. Some time during the fifties he moved to Logan County, W. Va., where he resided ever since. He served as a Confederate soldier during the war, and was a member of the West Virginia Legislature in 1872-1873. He leaves three sons-- Hon. John B. Floyd of Charleston, W. P. Floyd and B. Rush Floyd of Logan County, and four daughters--Mrs. S. P. Kelly, Mrs. Thomas Wiles, and Misses Sallie and Letitia Floyd. Col. Floyd was a devoted Catholic."

George married Causbia "Cosby" Ellen Burress in 1850 in Virginia, United States. Causbia (daughter of Thomas Burress and Mary "Polly" Bonham) was born in 1825 in Virginia, United States; died in 1890 in Kentucky?. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Causbia "Cosby" Ellen Burress was born in 1825 in Virginia, United States (daughter of Thomas Burress and Mary "Polly" Bonham); died in 1890 in Kentucky?.

    Other Events:

    • Census 1850: 1850, Western District, Tazewell, Virginia
    • Residence: 1860, Lawrence, Kentucky; Cosby is living in Kentucky with a female named Columbia who is 10. She is living right next door to George Floyd and his son Rush Floyd. I'm assuming Columbia is another illegitimate child of George Floyd's as later in life, she took his name.
    • Census 1870: 1870, Jeffersonville, Tazewell, Virginia, USA
    • Residence: 1880, Martin County, Kentucky; Cosby is 52, back in Kentucky and listed as a boarder and midwife in the household of AJ and Alice Barret

    Notes:

George Rogers Clark Floyd is thought to have had some nine children by three partners over several years. One of these partners seems to be Cosby Burress. I'm assuming she must have been a mistress as they never married and many of his other children were born around the same time as his children with Cosby. By 1870 Cosby is back in Tazewell and George is in West Virginia. Perhaps she finally got tired of his shit and left him?

    Notes:

    Married:
I don't believe they were ever married. There are two marriages for George, neither of them to Cosby, but their children were born during the years that George was married.

    • Location?: 1802-1804, Montgomery County, Virginia, USA; William is not listed in the tax records for these years, although Micajah is still listed. I could have missed him, film was very hard to read. But seems to have a problem being found to repay a debt...So may not have been taxed that year

    Deed:

    Census 1810:
1 Male 16-251 Male 45+; 1 Female -10; 1 Female 16-25; 1 Female 45+ (this would indicated William had two other daughters besides Elizabeth)

    Died:
Only a guess based on the reasoning in 1810 he was in Montgomery Co. In 1820 the only Wm within range is in Campbell who is too young. Assuming he didnt leave Montgomery and he didn't get missed in 1820 census, he probably died between 1812-20.

    Notes:

    Name:
The fact that Ellender is the daughter of John and Elizabeth is not proven! I also do not know if she was William's first or second wife. The only proof of their marriage was a deed in 1809 Campbell County.
