    Notes:

    The name Hale is probably of Welsh origin, being derived from "hal" which means moor. No doubt it was the name given to the place of residence of the first member of the family to bear it as a surname. It is met with frequently in the ancient records of England, Ireland and Wales. Although the most generally accepted form of spelling today is Hale, our colonial records carried it also as Haile, Hayle, Hail Hales and Heale.
