  • Name Raleigh "Raul" Hamilton Burress
    • Raleigh Hamilton Burress "Ra" was the oldest son of nine children. Born to John William Burress and Matilda Rose Earls on August 28, 1880. Raleigh was 15 when his mother, Matilda died. Unable to care for his children at the time, Raleigh's father, John, found temporary homes for them with family and friends. Raleigh stayed with his mothers sister Mattie, and her husband Byrd Patton Brewster.

Raleigh grew up with the Combs family, who had an adjoining farm next to the Burress'. He soon became engaged to Rose Stomper, an orphan and living with the Combs. Eventually, and for reasons unknown, the engagement was broken and he married Cana Mae Combs on January 31, 1900. Together they had 12 children.

Raleigh and his family migrated back and forth between Canebreak, West Virginia and Pounding Mill, Virginia. Raleigh worked various jobs, such a mining and farming, but he also cooked for the railroad, laid line track, and even preached. Raleigh also played the banjo, and was a caller for square dancing.

Three years After Cana died of tuberculosis in 1927, Raleigh married a widow named Frances Alley. They lived in Virginia. After Frances death, Raleigh was cared for my is son and daughter-in-law, Byrd and Ella. After Ella was diagnosed with cancer, Byrd was no longer able to care for Raleigh. None of the other family members were in a position to care for Raleigh, and he was placed in a nursing home, where he died in 1964. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Earls Cemetery on Earls Branch in Cliffield, Tazewell County Virginia
