James William Osborne Sr., 90, of Lebanon, Va., passed away on Saturday, August 8, 2015. Born August 17, 1924, in Raven, Va., he was the son of the late Vista and Pansy Dye Osborne Vance. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the 91st Division, 362nd Infantry Regiment, M Company. He fought in four campaigns and was mustered out as a Private First Class receiving the American Theater Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge and Four Battle Stars. The Division Commander called them his "Powder River Boys."
James was a coal miner working inside and outside as a mechanic, retiring from the Central Shop, Pittston Coal Group in 1986. He was a member of the UMWA Local 7950. James loved fishing, but had to give it up in his later years. James was a born again Christian who loved to keep busy, working at home, cutting firewood, and helping anyone who needed something done.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by three brothers, Junior Lee Osborne, Hubert Osborne, and Curtis Osborne; two sisters, Shirley Dye and Bea Whited; one grandson, Christopher Perkins; one great-grandson, Colton Perkins; one son-in-law, Alva Perkins, and one daughter-in-law, Brenda Osborne.
James married Betty McGhee on February 5, 1946, having been husband and wife for 69 years. From this union six children were born. Survivors include his wife, Betty; two daughters, Janet Perkins and fiance, John Combs, of Honaker, Va. and Donna Sue Johnson and husband Donnie, of Lebanon; four sons, Stephen Osborne Sr. and wife Rita, of Swords Creek, Va., Carl (Rusty) Osborne and wife, Molly, of Spring Branch, Texas, Kenneth Osborne and wife Annie, of Lebanon, and James William Osborne Jr. and wife, Becky, of Lebanon; special extended family, Marc and Dee Walters, of Bristow, Va; two brothers, Hershel Osborne, Raven, Va, and Whorley Osborne and wife Sally, Honaker. Also surviving are grandchildren, Douglas Perkins and wife Rhonda, Stephanie Castle, Stephen Osborne Jr. and wife Jill, Paul Osborne and wife Heather, Katie Johnson and husband Graham Campbell, Jessica Osborne, Jaime Kitt Osborne, and Wil Osborne; great-grandchildren, Devon Perkins and wife, Jessica, Joanie Perkins, Grant Perkins, Erica Osborne, Autumn Osborne and Miles.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews and Jerry McGhee.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, at 2 p.m. in the Owens Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Duane Musick officiating. Entombment will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Lebanon, with military graveside rites conducted by the Lebanon VFW Post 9864
