    This deed, made this 23rd day of April in the year one thousand nine hundred and twenty four between Mary Burress and H.P. Burress her husband parties of the first part, and Nannie Belle Hunt and Newton Hunt her husband parties of the second part. Witnesseth: that in consideration of the sum of One Dollar, cash in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledges and an exchange of another tract of land by deed of even date the said Mary Burress and H.P. Burress her husband doth grant until the said Nannie Belle Hunt and Newton Hunt with General Warranty, all of that certain piece or parcel of land lying and being in Baptist Valley Tazewell County and state of Virginia and more particularly described as follows: Beginning on a locust Northwardly from Nannie Harrisons barn, on the cross road running Easterly to a stake on top of a knob; thence up the spur to a stake near a low gap; thence to a bunch of Poplar Sprouts; thence leaving said spur, running Northeasterly to a wire fence; thence with the wire fence to Bandy?s line; thence with said Bandy?s line to the cross road; and then with the said road to the beginning and said to contain 15 acres more or less which land is sold by the boundary and not by the acre. And being the same tract of land conveyed to the said Mary Burress and H.P. Burress by Deed dated the 22nd day of April 1921 and recorded in the office of the Clerk of Tazewell County Virginia in Deed Book 90 page 523. The said Mary Burress and H.P. Burress covenant that they have the right to convey the said land to the grantees; that they have done no act to encumber the said land that the grantees shall have quiet possession of the land, free from all encumbrances, and that they the said parties of the first part, will execute such further assurances of the said land as may be requisite.     The Rev. S.E. Brooks conducted funeral services for Ira Burress, 27, of Raven Nest, who died Saturday, victim of a car wreck. Burial was in the family cemetery nearby. Mr. Burress was an employee of the Jewell Ridge mines, and was on his way to work when his car overturned, killing him instantly. He is survived by his parents, Mr.& Mrs. H.P. Burress, 6 brothers & 5 sisters, all of Raven Nest.

    Mrs. Helen C. Whitt, 71, of 206 Liberty St., Spencer, died in the Wellington Hospital yesterday after an illness of one year. Mrs. Whitt, who was born in Virginia, lived in Mount Vernon before moving to Spencer 17 years ago. She was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church in Layfayette. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Fay Davis, Spencer and Mrs. Bernice O'Byrne, Mount Vernon, a son Charlie, Chicago, ILL; ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Three sisters, Mrs. Gray Aldrich, Mrs. Blanche Rasnake and Mrs. Dora Taylor, all of Virginia; six brothers, Melvin, George, James, Bernard and Bill Burress, all of Virginia, and Luther Burress of West Virginia. Friends will be received in the Parker Funeral Home, Spenser, Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Services will be Sunday at 2 PM in the funeral home with the Rev. bobby Wheeler, Lafayette, officiating. Burial will be in Amity Cemetery, Knox County.

    Mrs. Gray "Betty" Colley Broughman, age 95, of Zellwood, Fl died Monday, August 20, 2007 in Eustis, Florida.

    Mrs. Broughman was born on June 4, 1912, Tazewell, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Henry P. Burress and Mary Frances Quesenberry Burress. She was a homemaker all her life and was a member of the Galatia Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose Chapter 22 in Clifton Forge, VA. Mrs. Broughman is survived by three daughters; Virginia Colley Nichols and husband James, Carrell Colley Crowder and husband Loyd, and Ruth Anne Colley Williams and husband Gerry; a daughter-in-law, Fran Colley; ten grandchildren; fourteen great- grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Broughman was preceded in death by her first husband Stanford Colley, her second husband, William Broughman; her son, Thomas Colley; four sisters, Blanche Rasnake, Pearl Shaw, Margaret Basham, and Helen Whitt; four brothers, James Burress, Bill Burress, Luther Burress, and George Burress. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Friday, August 24, 2007 at Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor, with the Reverend Charlie Johnson officiating. Pallbearers will Mrs. Broughmanâ??s grandsons. The family receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge. There will be a memorial service held at 7:00 PM by the Women of the Moose, Chapter 22. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge.

    Mrs. Margaret Lillie Basham, 55, of Cedar Bluff, Va., died Wednesday in a Richlands, Va. hospital following a long illness. Born in Cedar Bluff, she was a daughter of the late Henry P. and Mary Quesenberry Burress. She had lived in the Cedar Bluff area her entire life and was a former practical nurse at Clinch Valley Clinic in Richlands until her retirement in 1969. She was a member of Richlands Rebekahs Lodge No. 62IOOF and the VFW Women's Auxiliary No. 7136 at Tazewell, Va. She was a member of Cedar Bluff United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. C. F. Mundy and Rev. Walter L. Gates officiating.     BANDY, Va. -- Mrs. Blanche Virginia Rasnake, age 83, passed away Sunday, July 27, 2003, in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness. A life-long resident of Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Quesenberry Burress. In addition to her parents, seven brothers and six sisters preceded her in death. Mrs. Rasnake is survived by her husband of 60 years, Campbell Rasnake; four daughters, Mrs. Jim (Lucille) Beavers of Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Ruth Beavers of Cedar Bluff, Mrs. Joel (Connie) Lester of Cedar Bluff and Mrs. Eric (Terry) Newberry of Richlands; two sons, Roy Rasnake and wife Elizabeth of Essington, Pa., and Buddy Rasnake and wife Wanda of Centerville, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Gray Broughman of Naples, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great- great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews also survive.

    Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2003, in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff, with Rev. Gerald Stacy and Rev. David Brannock officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff from 6-9 p.m. Monday.

    MAXWELL, Va. -- James I. Burress, 77, passed on Monday, May 28, 2001, at Tazewell Community Hospital. Born to the late Henry and Mary Frances Quesenberry Burress in Cedar Bluff, Va., he spent the past 40 years residing in Tazewell County, Va. A veteran of World War II, he served with honor aboard the Destroyer Escort, VSS Lamons (Class DE-743). Upon returning home, he completed studies at West Virginia Business College and conferred his degree with the Class of 1946. He retired as finance manager from the former Pat's Pontiac and GMC in Doran, Va. Never one to be idle, he continued working part time for the Tazewell Farmer's Livestock Market as well as supporting local VFW Post 7136 of Tazewell, Va. He was an avid bowler and golfer and enjoyed both as his favorite pastimes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and six sisters. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Virginia E. Beavers Burress; daughter, Joy Mulkey and husband, Jim, of Maxwell; son, James P. Burress and wife, Jenny, of Rural Retreat, Va.; grandchildren, Scott Burress, Christy Burress and Jordan Lowe-Mulkey; two sisters, Gray Braughman of Florida and Blanche Rasnake and husband, Campbell, of Cedar Bluff; and two special family friends, Chris Smiley and Amandda Tirey. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, Va., with the Rev. Max Linkous officiating. Members of Barns-Beavers VFW Post 7136 of Tazewell will conduct military graveside rites. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be neighbors in the Maxwell community. The family will receive friends at Perry & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, and from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2001. The funeral will then proceed to the cemetery for the service.
