    Mrs. Effie Gray Thompson, 84, of 1210 Highland Ave. Bluefield, died Friday evening in a Bluefield hospital following a long illness. Born in Tazewell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Ants and Cardelia Waddell Burress. She was a widow of Andy J. Thompson, a former Bluefield plumbing business owner. She was a member of Grace Methodist Church of Bluefield, and had been a resident of Bluefield since 1907. Surviving are two sons, Ralph W. Thompson and Alfred A. Thompson, both of Bluefield; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield. With Rev. Bill Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, Va. Friends may call at the funeral home tbday from 5 and 9 p.m.

    Jack Burress, 90 of Bluefield, VA, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 22, 2017. He was the son of the late James Robert and Tinie Stump Burress. Jack had proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He attended Bailey United Methodist Church. He enjoyed playing cards with his family. In his younger years, he enjoyed traveling and fishing. He was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. He will be missed. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Lucille Burress and his second wife: Ernestine Durham Burress; 4 brothers; 6 sisters; a still born grandson: John Thomas Burress.

    Those left to cherish his memory are his sons: Jack Alvin Burress (Shelley), Darwin Burress (Joanne); brothers: Leonard Burress (Faith), Kenneth Burress; sisters: Marie Cole, Melvina Aliff, Helen Clites; grandchildren: Adriane Mankundis and Brian Burress; step-son: Jackie Hoops (Carolyn); step-daughter: Diana Yost; step-grandsons: Samuel, Clayton and Joseph Healy, Billy and Brandon Hoops and Shane Yost; 15 great-grandchildren.
    A service to celebrate his life will be held Monday, November 27, 2017 at 12:00 P.M. at Dudley Memorial Chapel with Rev. Steve Aker officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens.

    FLINTSTONE, Md. Gladys Gertrude Burress, 68, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011 in a Cumberland, Md. hospital. Born July 12, 1943 in Bluefield, Va., she was the daughter of James Robert and Tinie (Stump) Burress.

    Gladys lived most of her life in Bluefield, Va. She then moved to Maryland where she made her home with her sister, Helen Clites.

    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, James, George, Thomas and Raymond Burress; four sisters, Beatrice Splaun, Francis Wright, Edith Virginia and Margaret Lucille Burress.

    Survivors include sisters, Marie Cole of New Castle, Va., Melvina Aliff of West Palm Beach, Fla., Dorothy Burkett of Lake Worth, Fla., Helen Clites of Flintstone, Md.; brothers, Jack Burress and wife Ernestine of Bluefield, Va., Leonard Burress and wife Faith of Princeton, W.Va., and Kenneth Burress and wife Janice of Prophetstown, Ill.; several nieces and nephews.

    Dorothy Mae Burkett (nee Burress), 77 of Lake Worth, Florida, formerly of Bluefield, VA, passed away Friday, June 20, 2014, after a courageous battle with several illnesses.

    Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister and aunt. In addition to being a wonderful mother and housewife, Dorothy worked a variety of jobs including cashier, caregiver and dog groomer. She enjoyed many activities including skating, crossword puzzles and cooking.

    Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Robert ?Bobby? Allen Burkett; her parents, James Robert Burress and Tiny (Stump) Burress; her brothers, James Burress. George Burress, Thomas Burress and Raymond Burress; her sisters, Virginia Burress, Lucille Burress, Gladys Burress , Beatrice Splaun and Francis Wright.

    Dorothy is survived by her son, Ted Allen Burkett; her brothers, Jack Burress of VA, Leonard Burress (Faith) of WV and Kenneth (Janice) Burress of Illinois; her sisters, Marie Cole of VA, Melvina Alliff of Florida and Helen Clites of Maryland; many nieces and nephews.

    Dorothy lived each day of her life with faith and kindness. Her life-long generosity, both in deed and spirit, was graciously shared by all who knew and loved her. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.

    A graveside service will be held Thursday, July 17, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Grandview Memory Gardens with Rev James Bassett officiating. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Grandview by 10:45 A.M.
