John W. COMBS, aged 70 years of Pounding Mill, died Wednesday morning in a Richlands hospital of injuries received when he fell from a truck operated by Ed MARTIN, his nephew. Mr. COMBS fell from the truck about a half mile south of Richlands on the Kents Ridge road. He was born in Tazewell County, a son of the late Pine and Mary Whitt COMBS. He was employed at Jenkins Jones by the Pocahontas Fuel Company until 1947. His wife preceded him in death in 1950. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon in the Maxwell Methodist church.

Born in Tazewell, Va, July 7, 1893, he was a son of the late Richard and Elizabeth Totten Combs. He was a member of UMW Local 7086 at Eccles, having worked in area mines for 35 years before retiring. Irby Combs, indicted for sodomy, pleaded guity and was given one year and a day in the penitentiary, credit being allowed for 8 months spent in jail. Combs was found guilty early this year and was sent to the penitentiary for 18 months. The verdict in his case was set aside and he was returned to this county. Last week his trial was continued to the January term on motion of the state attorneys.

Charging that her husband, E.H. Burress, had "beaten me up." Mrs. Bessie Burress, of Welch, had Magistrate H.W. Herndon of Welch issue a warrant for his arrest Tuesday. Officers lodged him in jail to await a hearing before the magistrate.

Former Countian Reported Killed In Fort Worth, Texas Emory H. Burress, 37, former resident of McDowell County, now in the army, was instantly killed in an automobile accident at Fort Worth, Texas, Saturday afternoon, according to word received here over the weekend.

No details of the accident were received other than that the car was struck by a train, at a railroad crossing, killing Mr. Burress and injuring two women.

Born in Tazewell County, Mr. Burress was employed for a few years by the Carter Coal Company, at Caretta, and later worked for a railroad company at Huntington. He had been in the west the past few years.

He is survived by his father, Raleigh H. Burress of Cedar Bluff; four brothers, Sherman and Byrd, at Richlands, Va.; Ernest, at Caretta; and Perry Vernon, who is in the service. He also is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Tyler Bledsoe of Squire, WV and two sisters in Baltimore, Md. and a son, Vernon, who is in the US Navy.

Georgia E. (Burress) Frank, 88, of Glen Rock, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Hanover Hall Nursing Center, Hanover. She was the wife of the late William F. Harman and the late Louis E. Frank. Mrs. Frank was born on April 15, 1915, in Richlands, Va., a daughter of the late Raul and Cannie Mae (Combs) Burress. Formerly of Baltimore, she lived in the Glen Rock area since 1992 and she was a member of the Shrewsbury Baptist Church. She leaves a son, William G. Harman Sr., of Glen Rock, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Terry L. Harman. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Geiple Funeral Home Inc., 53 Main St., Glen Rock. Burial will be in Moreland Park Cemetery, Baltimore. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Richard Bishop.

Alfred Ray Martin, 84, of Rutherfordton, N.C., and formerly from Bluefield, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2011 in Rutherfordton.

He was born in Bluefield and was a son of the late Robert Martin and Rachel Combs Martin.

Mr. Martin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and retired after 33 years with NASA Space Center in Greenbelt, Md. He was a member of the Electricians Union Representatives with NASA.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Lee Akers Martin; daughters, Roberta Volant and Deana Sipe. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Everet Martin, Virgil Martin; and sisters, Myrtle Reiman Catherine Derr.

He is survived by sons, Danny Martin and wife (Rita), Albrightsville, Pa., Barry Martin and wife (Janet), Boonesboro, Md., Terry Martin, Rutherfordton, N.C.;
daughter, Deborah (Smith, Tommy) Martin, Mulberry, Fla.;
16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dudley Memorial Chapel in Bluefield, Va. with the Reverend Steve Aker officiating.

Burial will follow in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Graveside military services will be conducted by the Bluefield Virginia VFW Memorial Post 9696 and the Pocahontas American Legion #14.

Friends may visit with the family today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
