    MAXWELL, Va. -- James I. Burress, 77, passed on Monday, May 28, 2001, at Tazewell Community Hospital. Born to the late Henry and Mary Frances Quesenberry Burress in Cedar Bluff, Va., he spent the past 40 years residing in Tazewell County, Va. A veteran of World War II, he served with honor aboard the Destroyer Escort, VSS Lamons (Class DE-743). Upon returning home, he completed studies at West Virginia Business College and conferred his degree with the Class of 1946. He retired as finance manager from the former Pat's Pontiac and GMC in Doran, Va. Never one to be idle, he continued working part time for the Tazewell Farmer's Livestock Market as well as supporting local VFW Post 7136 of Tazewell, Va. He was an avid bowler and golfer and enjoyed both as his favorite pastimes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers and six sisters. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Virginia E. Beavers Burress; daughter, Joy Mulkey and husband, Jim, of Maxwell; son, James P. Burress and wife, Jenny, of Rural Retreat, Va.; grandchildren, Scott Burress, Christy Burress and Jordan Lowe-Mulkey; two sisters, Gray Braughman of Florida and Blanche Rasnake and husband, Campbell, of Cedar Bluff; and two special family friends, Chris Smiley and Amandda Tirey. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, Va., with the Rev. Max Linkous officiating. Members of Barns-Beavers VFW Post 7136 of Tazewell will conduct military graveside rites. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be neighbors in the Maxwell community. The family will receive friends at Perry & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, 2001, and from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2001. The funeral will then proceed to the cemetery for the service.
