29th Regiment, Virginia Infantry was authorized in November, 1861, and was to contain seven companies under Colonel A.C. Moore and three companies at Pound Gap. However, this organization never took place. Moore's five companies from Abingdon and companies raised in the spring of 1862 evidently made up the nine-company regiment. It was assigned to the Valley District, Department of Northern Virginia, then moved to Kentucky where it was engaged at Middle Creek. Later it saw action in Western Virginia and for a time served in North Carolina under General French. In March, 1863, it totaled 732 men. Attached to General Corse's Brigade the unit participated in Longstreet's Suffolk Expedition and during the Gettysburg Campaign was on detached duty in Tennessee and North Carolina. In the spring of 1864 it returned to Virginia and took its place in the Petersburg trenches north and south of the James River and ended the war at Appomattox. Many were lost at Sayler's Creek, and only 1 officer and 27 men surrendered on April 9, 1865. The field officers were Colonels James Giles and Alfred C. Moore; Lieutenant Colonels Alexander Haynes, William Leigh, and Edwin R. Smith; and Majors Ebenezer Bruster, William R.B. Horne, and Isaac White.

Civil War Veteran Answers Last Call After Months of Illness

Maxwell, Va., Jan. 23 - Mr. Bill Pruett, one of Tazewell's well known citizens, died at the home of his daughter, on Tuesday night, January the 8th. he was about 83 years of age, and had been ill since last fall. He was taken sick at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Margaret Bandy, on Dicks Creek, and on Saturday before New Years, he was brought to his daughter's at Maxwell, where he only lived a short while. He leaves a son and three daughters to mourn his loss, Mr. Dudley Pruett, of Baptist Valley; Mrs. John Long, of Maxwell; Mrs. Margaret Bandy of Dicks Creek, besides a number of grand children and great grand children. His wife died about 13 years ago. Mr. Pruett was a soldier in the Civil War. He was greatly loved by all that knew him. He always met you with a smile. He joined the Christian church in 1917 and was baptized by Rev. J.S. Meadows. The funeral service was held Thursday morning at 11 o'clock by Rev. Harvie Bowling, of this place, and the remains were laid to rest in the Maxwell graveyard, where it was his desire to be laid to rest.

Robert Lee Bandy, 84, of Route 1, Bandy, died Nov. 13, in an Abington Hosptial. His death was attributed to natural causes. He was a son of the late Thomas C. and Maggie Pruett Bandy. He was a native of Tazewell County and had lived most of his life at Dix Creek. He was a member of the Dix Creek Advert Christian Church where he had served as Sunday School superintendent and song leader for many years. He was a retired employee of the Pocahontas Fuel Co. Five brothers and two sister preceded him in death. Surviving are one sister, Mrs. Ruth Sizemore of Bandy, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Nov. 15 at 11 am from Peery and St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell with the Rev. Carl Gross and the Rev. Leonard Lester officiating. Burial followed at the Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield Tazewell Road. Nephews served as Pall bearers.
